Ranking the Universities

De bladeren vallen en dus is het ook tijd voor de jaarlijkse ranglijsten van universiteiten en opleidingen. In de afgelopen weken kwamen de nieuwe lijstjes van Times Higher Education, Elsevier, het Center for Higher Education Development en afgelopen vrijdag van Shanghai University (Academic Ranking of World Universities) weer voorbij, inclusief de bijbehorende persberichten van universiteiten die ‘de eerste, de beste’ in een of meer van die lijstjes waren.

Ik vond het leukste bericht tot nu toe dat in de CHE ExcellenceRanking een poging is gedaan boekcitaties te meten en in de ranking mee te nemen:

“For the first time, an effort was made to try not only an analysis of the citation of articles, but also of books. CWTS Leiden undertook this endeavour as we were convinced that in the social science subjects analysed in 2009, books play a major role. Although it proved impossible to provide an analysis exactly comparable to article citations because of insufficiencies in the databases which are available, it was possible to identify a number of highly cited books which are considered highly relevant in the respective field. However, because of the scarceness of data, this indicator was not used as a self-reliant indicator but as a “+” indicator for the publication indicator. This indicator was chosen for the 2009 round.”

Blijkbaar is het Leidse CWTS nu echt bezig hier werk van te maken, zoals onlangs ook al uit een berichtje in Mare viel af te leiden.
